In 1936 the great gran uncle of Prince Harry, King Edward VIII abdicated his throne to marry American and divorcee Wallis Simpson

In 2019, four generations later, Prince Harry married American and divorced Megan Markle. In 2020 announced that, following their decision to step back from royal duties, he and his wife have agreed not to use their Royal Highness styles.

Edward VIII, later Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972), was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December of that year

Edward was born during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria as the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary.

Edward’s womanizing and reckless behavior during the 1920s and 1930s worried King George V, who was disappointed by his son’s failure to settle down in life, was disgusted by his affairs with married women, and was reluctant to see him inherit the Crown.

The prince was introduced to American Wallis Simpson. Simpson had divorced her first husband and was married then to second husband, Ernest Simpson.

King George V died on January 1936, and Edward ascended the throne as King Edward VIII.

The new king planned to marry Simpson

On 16 November 1936, Edward invited Prime Minister Baldwin to Buckingham Palace and expressed his desire to marry Simpson when she became free to remarry. Baldwin informed him that his subjects would deem the marriage morally unacceptable, largely because remarriage after divorce was opposed by the Church of England, and the people would not tolerate Simpson as queen

Edward proposed an alternative solution of a Morganatic marriage, sometimes called a left-handed marriage. Is a marriage between people of unequal social rank, which in the context of royalty prevents the passage of the husband’s titles and privileges to the wife and any children born of the marriage, but it was rejected by the British Cabinet

In December 1936, King Edward VIII signed all documents and instruments of abdication

«I declare my irrevocable determination to renounce the throne for myself and for my descendants and my desire that effect should be given to this instrument of abdication immediately»

He added that the «decision was mine and mine alone … The other person most nearly concerned has tried up to the last to persuade me to take a different course»

His brother, the Duke of York, succeeded to the throne as George VI. George VI’s elder daughter, Princess Elizabeth, became heir presumptive.

*George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; King Albert VI

14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) Known as «Bertie» among his family and close friends, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He became known as a symbol of British determination to win the Second World War against Germany.

In 1920 he met for the first time since childhood Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the youngest daughter of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Lady Elizabeth

*Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (4 August 1900 – 30 March 2002)

In 1923, they were married and Lady Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth

They had two children: Elizabeth (called «Lilibet» by the family) who was born in 1926, and Margaret who was born in 1930

She was queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband’s accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter.

*Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary;[2] born 21 April 1926)[a] is Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms.

She was born in London as the first child of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. She married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Charles Prince of Wales (Charles Philip Arthur George was born 14 November 1948.

He proposed to Lady Diana Spencer  in February 1981. She accepted and they married in St Paul’s Cathedral on 29 July of that year. They had two children: Princes William born in 1982 and Henry known as Harry.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, (born Henry Charles Albert David) 15 September 1984

On 8 November 2016 Kensington Palace confirmed that Prince Harry was into a relationship with an American divorcee- actress Meghan Markle

The couple married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 19 May 2018.

In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess announced that they were stepping back from their role as senior members of the royal family, and would balance their time between the United Kingdom and North America. The couple also announced that they would seek financial independence while continuing to support their charities and assist the Queen in royal duties

Never the less, according to a statement released by Queen Elizabeth II and Buckingham Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will no longer be official «working members» of the royal family

«As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments,»

«The Sussexes will not use their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family,» the palace said. Harry will still be Prince Harry, and the Duke of Sussex as Meghan will remain Duchess,

Harry and his wife have agreed not to use their Royal Highness styles, although

Harry still be Prince Harry and the Duke of Sussex and Megan Duchess of Sussex

Notes:

Harry ‘followed’ his great grand uncle King Edward in several ways:

*stepping back from the monarchy

*Marring a divorced American woman

*traying to stay as royal, but denied
